Comic Strip

Comic Strip

The comic strip is a satire of the TV show "The X-Files." The story goes through the main characters, Bob and Kate, as they bicker about the existence of UFOs until they meet an extraterrestrial that needs help finding his lost UFO, only to find out that it crashed and melted on the moon. The target audience is anyone who enjoys reading comic strips, but since this comic strip is a spoof of the original show, the biggest target audience group is fans of the TV show. The software used to make it was by hand drawing it with fine liners and coloring it with alcohol-based markers. The design intent of this hand illustration was to assemble a funny caricature strip based on a 1990s science-fiction television show.

Process Work - Planning/Brainstorming Stage

Before starting to create the storyboard ideas to make the comic strip, this was before the initial sketches to describe the characters and story. It involved creating a beginning, middle, and end, along with answering the five Ws in the beginning section. The last part was writing a rough idea of what the dialogue could be about. This step helped me to know what to draw for each scene and combining on the main characters.

For the initial thumbnail storyboard sketches, I wanted to experiment with the title and end panel in other ways because I could use alternative typefaces, depict the alien in the comic differently, and change the layout of the title and end panel. I also wanted to draw the characters of Bob, Katherine, and the alien differently within the comic strip. It helped show a range of how I wanted the final version to look. I didn't feel the need to draw the scene another way because of how it was written in the preparation section, and the first sketch conveyed enough of what was happening in each set.
